If you need to compare BMW models in depth in order to make the right choice, you’ve come to the right place. Check out our 2020 BMW X3 vs. X5 matchup below!

BMW X3 vs. X5: Interior Space

Although both the X3 interior and the X5 interior seat five passengers as standard, the X5 has a larger cabin with more space for cargo:

  • BMW X5 Cargo Space: 33.9 cubic feet (seats upright) or 72.3 cubic feet (seats flat)

The Cresskill area’s larger families will also be glad to learn that the X5 also offers an available third row! It will bring your total seating capacity from five to seven. Check out the BMW X5 interior to learn more about its dimensions.

BMW X3 vs. X5: Performance

No BMW SAV® could be complete without something exciting under the hood! Both models are available with your choice between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, and each allows you to choose from multiple compelling engines. Take a look at your options below:

Standard Engines: BMW X3 vs. X5

  • The X3 starts with a 248-hp 2.0L I-4 engine that delivers 258 lb-ft of torque.
  • The X5 starts with a 335-hp 3.0L I-6 engine, offering 330 lb-ft of torque.

Engine Upgrades: BMW X3 vs. X5

  • With the X3, you can choose to upgrade with a 3.0L M Performance I-6 that provides 335 hp and 382 lb-ft of torque.
  • The X5 can be optioned with a 456-hp 4.4L V8 that puts out 479 lb-ft of torque, or a 523-hp 4.4L M Performance V8 that offers 553 lb-ft of the same.

Interested in moving heavy cargo through Closter or Westwood? The X3 towing capacity tops out at 4,400 pounds, while the X5 capacity can reach up to 7,200 pounds with proper equipment.

BMW X3 vs. X5: Notable Features

Both the X3 and the X5 include standard leatherette seating, voice-activated navigation, and much more as standard. Both are also available with ventilated front seats and a hands-free power liftgate. However, there are more than a few differences between the standard arrays in each model:

  • The X3 actually comes standard with 12 speakers, compared to 10 in the baseline X5.
  • The X5 offers heated front seats, four 12-volt power outlets, and speed-sensitive volume control as standard. The X3 requires an upgrade for heated front seats, only comes equipped with two power outlets, and doesn’t offer speed-sensitive volume control.
