Transmission fluid is a vital component in keeping your vehicle’s engine operating while commuting in Fort Lee. Clean transmission fluid provides optimal fuel efficiency, but dirty or low transmission fluid doesn’t allow the engine to work properly, which could lead to costly problems. Knowing how to check your transmission fluid can save you a large maintenance bill down the road.

Checking Transmission Fluid Levels

When you know how to check your transmission fluid, you can replace dirty fluid or replenish low transmission fluid before it starts to slow you down. Follow these steps for checking your transmission fluid levels:

  1. Turn on your car. Allow the engine to warm up before checking the fluid level
  2. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. On front-wheel cars, it’s usually to the right of the oil dipstick. Having trouble finding it? Check with your owner’s manual.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid, moving it between your thumb and forefinger. Is it almost clear, with a light pink color? If it is, it’s good. However, if the fluid looks dirty or smells burned, the fluid needs to be replaced. You can easily do this yourself or schedule a service appointment with BMW of Tenafly.
  4. Wipe off the dipstick with a rag, then place it back into the car. Pull the dipstick out again and check the level. If it is below the ‘Full’ marking, add more. Use a funnel, and work carefully to avoid overfilling.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

Many Closter drivers are wondering ‘how often do you check your transmission fluid?’ The fluid should be checked monthly. Also, you should check the levels of your power steering fluid and car oil as well. Your owner’s manual will list any additional monthly maintenance requirements. When checking your transmission fluid, keep in mind a few other things:

  • Check your owner’s manual for the type of transmission fluid your vehicle needs.
  • Changing the fluid on a manual transmission requires a jack to access the plug underneath.
  • Does your vehicle hesitate before shifting gears? This could be a sign your fluid is low, but it could also indicate a more serious maintenance problem.
  • Replace your transmission fluid every 50,000 to 100,000 miles.
