What Does It Mean When Your Car Overheats?

Every vehicle has its own “normal” temperature range, but most cars tend to operate between 195 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit. If you notice that the temperature gauge is reading far higher than normal, do notdrive the car. An overheated car is a clear sign that there is a bigger issue to take care of.

Why is my car overheating? What causes a car to overheat? Here are the main reasons overheating may occur:

  • A leak in the cooling system – One of the most common reasons a car would overheat is a leak in the cooling system. The radiator, hoses, water pump, head gasket, and thermostat housing are all components of the cooling system which can be susceptible to leaks.
  • A problem with your coolant – Using the wrong coolant or having the wrong coolant-to-water ratio (50/50 is proper) can cause an engine to overheat. You should also routinely check the coolant level.
  • A blockage in the coolant hose – There are plenty of opportunities for dirt and debris to get in your cooling system on Closter-area roads, and this can cause blockages in the coolant hose.
  • An issue with the radiator – A blockage in the radiator, a leak, or something wrong with the radiator fan, are all issues that could cause a car to overheat.
  • A broken water pump – The water pump sends engine coolant throughout the cooling system, and if it stops working, has a leak, or a shifted pump shaft, your vehicle will overheat.

What to Do When a Car Overheats

In most cases your car may not overheat until you’re already on the road. If you’re running the air conditioning, turn it off and set your heater at full blast. While this may be uncomfortable, it will help pull heat off your engine. When you’re able to pull over safely, you should not attempt to pop the hood by hand for at least 30 minutes. The best way to maintain your safety and that of nearby drivers is to call a towing service to pick your car up and bring it to a mechanic of choice.
